An update on the garden… a few rows have been planted and the water containers were delivered on site this week. They haven’t been filled yet but we hope that will happen soon.
Updated: 2012 April 22 – the water containers are filled. There looks to be about 10 rows planted on the south side.

The Napanee community food bank garden has been plowed up.
Planting began at 4pm of Friday .
So far, we have
3 rows of onions (dutch sets)
3 rows of peas ( 2 bolero, 1 dakota)
2 rows beets (early wonder) and
2 rows carrots (nantes).
The place is so dry, just like a dust bowl.

We hope to drop by this week and take some fresh images of the garden.
Over the last two years we have been taking weekly images from the four corners of the garden to try and give a time lapse visual over the summer, but they did not work out as well as expected. This year we will choose a few specific rows and specific plants and follow them over the growing season.

Napanee Food Bank Garden 2011 Summary
We kept a logbook of harvest this year and today I went through and transcribed it into a 2011foodbankgardensummary spreadsheet (11kb .pdf).
Basically the summary goes like this: 88 cabbages, 63 squash and 70 bushels of beets, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, potatos, tomatos and yellow beans.
Thanks to all the volunteers, especially Susan Withers who made the logbook happen.
Now at least we have a baseline of harvest goods to look at, along with how much of each type of vegetable.
Kim & I spent approx 1 hr/week for 25 odd weeks tending our three rows. It was fun!
Our involvement was based through the Lennox & Addington Horticultural Society.
This was our 9th week since we were assigned rows 6,7 and 26 to look after in the Napanee Food Bank Garden.
These images are from our week 9 visit (on Wednesday August 24) and we plan to take image each week and post them here as a historic record accessible to all.
The replanted rows 6 & 7 were slowly coming up. Row 26 beans are done and ready for harvest.
Thunderstorms were threatening so we did not water… the ground was not bone dry by any means.
