SOLAR OBSERVING At Starlight Cascade Observatory
Solar Filtered Scope Solar Observingis an observing technique that takes extreme care A Solar Filter that is put on the front of your telescope is a must, if you are doing any kind of solar observing, be it prime focus or solar projection observing. NEVER look through a telescope without any filter, as this can cause permanent eye damage (blindness) Solar Filtered Scope
Solar Projection There is Eye Piece Projection Observing, which the sun is projected onto a white background through the eyepiece, as shown to the right. The picture shows using an 10" Dobsonian Telescope (A.Vibert Douglas) on loan from the RASC Kingston Centre
With Solar Observing you can contribute to the Scientific Community as an Amateur by collecting Relative sunspot numbers. I collect this data monthly and send it in to the AAVSOAmerican Association of Variable Star Observers. Each Solar Observer has their own code number for authenticity and database management. These results are then combined and sent to NOAA.
In the above pictures you see the instrument setup for my solar observations.

I have been actively looking at the Sun over 20+ years now, but just started to submit all my solar results in 1999. At the 88th Annual fall meeting of the AAVSO held in Hyannis Massaschusetts on October 30, 1999 I was presented with a certificate for the Solar Contributions that I have done over the years. My code name for observation submission to the AAVSO is HAYK.
