One of the methods was to prepare a bed for garlic the preceeding summer (we plant garlic in the late fall), by planting hot mustard and cutting it down before it goes to seed, at least twice.
Till this in and finish the 2nd tilling a few weeks before planting the garlic. This will hopefully inhibit the activity of any bad nematodes thinking about coming this way.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_0906-150x134.jpg" alt="" title="Resize of IMG_0906" width="150" height="134" size-thumbnail wp-image-2774" srcset="https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_0906-150x134.jpg 150w, https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_0906-299x267.jpg 299w, https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_0906.jpg 334w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" />

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_09081-150x103.jpg" alt="" title="Resize of IMG_0908" width="150" height="103" size-thumbnail wp-image-2775" srcset="https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_09081-150x103.jpg 150w, https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_09081-299x206.jpg 299w, https://starlightcascade.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Resize-of-IMG_09081.jpg 484w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px" />

Marigolds are also recommended in helping to repel/minimize nematode issues so we planted some of those as well, not mixed in with the mustard but next to it.

We grow garlic.. lots of it. 40+ varieties in 2011.
