{"id":5610,"date":"2014-03-25T06:33:04","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T10:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/?p=5610"},"modified":"2014-03-26T11:17:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T15:17:14","slug":"sid2-recommissioning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/2014\/03\/sid2-recommissioning\/","title":{"rendered":"SID2 recommissioning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"\/sid2\">Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance 2 system<\/a> was completely rebuilt from the ground up.<br \/>\nA reused computer (Windows 7, Intel atom 1.6GHZ processor, 2GB ddr2 RAM) was put together and install in the garage, away from the noisy RF environment in the radioroom (other computers, radios, etc).<br \/>\nThe SID2 antenna, receiver and data logging multimeter were also moved out into the garage.<br \/>\nThis provides it with some separation distance from the other systems and protection from the elements.<br \/>\nInitially results look good, a better signal from NAA in Cutler Maine at 24.0 KHz with our directional antenna aimed east\/west.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/sid2\/images\/sco-20140322.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sid2\/images\/sco-20140322.png\" width=400><br \/>\nLast data before the move<\/A> This was the graph from the 24 hours ending 2014 March 22<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/sid2\/images\/sco-20140324.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sid2\/images\/sco-20140324.png\" width=400><br \/>\nFirst data after the move<\/A><br \/>\nThis was the graph from the 24 hours ending 2014 March 24<\/p>\n<p>The gain had to be readjusted as did the  Y axis scale.  It will be a few days before everything settles down and we can work on the automated data processing scripts.<br \/>\nIn addition, usb cable extensions were no longer needed between the serial-usb adapter to the computer.  Everything is a little simpler.<br \/>\nWe also found a broken antenna lead during the move, probably occurring earlier and probably caused by two cats racing around the house.  the antenna should be safer now that it is in an area not designated as a racetrack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance 2 system was completely rebuilt from the ground up.
