Having just come back from the RASC General Assembly, she has refilled the motivation reservoir  and wants to do some observing&#8230; soon!<br \/>\nWe thought that the primary and secondary mirrors were a little dirty and they were, so we went through a cleaning cycle.<br \/>\n1) Marked the  mounting position points with a marker and then removed the mirrors<br \/>\n2) rinsed, with the mirror at a high angle, under tap water for a minute (no compressed air available, so skipped that step).<br \/>\n3) with a mix of warm tap water and one drop of dishsoap, dragged wet cottonballs across the surface, from the centre to the outside edge, under their own weight.<br \/>\n4) rinsed again, checking for flow obstructions indicating a spec still on the surface.<br \/>\n5) more attention to he problem areas, sometimes with the slightest of actual pressure on the cottonball on the mirror surface.<br \/>\n6) another tap water rinse<br \/>\n7) a distilled water rinse<br \/>\n8) a 70% isopropyl alcohol rinse (probably will use 90%+ next time&#8230; the alcohol evaporated and left behind a lot of small  water drops to evaporate).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414-299x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"224\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414-299x224.jpg 299w, https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414-1023x767.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/starlightcascade.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170703_165414.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>9) drying with the mirror in an upright position.<br \/>\n10) remounting in the same orientation<\/p>\n<p>The secondary mirror was not nearly so bad but it too was subject to the same process.<br \/>\nIn the end, the mirror was a lot cleaner than before, which will help to improve the contrast <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the 20cm telescope mirror from &#8220;Starbuck&#8221;, Kim&#8217;s newtonian on a Dobsonian mount.
