X1.6 Solar Flare
On Wednesday 2014 September 10th, starting around 17:31 UT, the sun had a major X class Solar Flare coming from Sunspot AR2158.
The 1st note of this was on the radiojove-data email list at 13:44 EDT (17:44 UT):
HUGE SOLAR EVENT 1742 UT. THIS IS BIG.
HNRAO – Hawk’s Nest Radio Astronomy Observatory – http://home.comcast.net/~starmanjb/dual.html
At 13:58 EDT (17:58 UT) it was confirmed from a 2nd source.
Shortly after 14:00 EDT (18:00 UT) we were able to confirm this ourselves with data from the SCGO Radiojove system.
From Spaceweather.com:
EARTH-DIRECTED X-FLARE AND CME: Sunspot AR2158 erupted on Sept. 10th at 17:46 UT, producing an X1.6-class solar flare. A flash of ultraviolet radiation from the explosion ionized the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere, disturbing HF radio communications for more than an hour. More importantly, the explosion hurled a CME directly toward Earth. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory photographed the expanding cloud:
Our personal SCGO peak time looks about 17:38 UT.
Wow. Too bad the audio recorded was not working properly. Will have to fix that!
Previous to this, the last big flare we caught was an X1.1 class flare on 2012 March 5th.
