We dropped by the Napanee Community Food Bank Garden on Thursday June 28th, 2012 and again on Thursday July 5th to do some work, mainly weeding and watering. It has been hot and dry with not a lot of rain at all in the summer weeks.

Canada Day in Bath Ontario 2012

So we were walking down Main Street in Bath Ontario, around 10:30 am on Sunday July 1st, 2012.
And in a quick second we were in the middle of a 19th centiry firefight!
It was the was of 1812 re-enactment of the american invasion of Bath and this was the British regular and local miltia counter-attack to drive the Americans off the land and back onto their waiting ships.
a short time later there was a naval battle with cannons booming and the subsequent chase of the HMS Royal George east towards Kingston for the protection of Fort Henry.

On the morning of Sunday 2012 July 01 (Happy Canada Day!) we were up and outside at 04:00 to observe and photograph this conjuntion of the Pleiades star cluster, the planet Jupiter and the planet Venus. They are rising in the east, as the sky brightens with the oncoming sun.

July 4th, Happy Holidays to our friends to the south

It was a very restless sleep overnight, very hot and muggy. We got rain that we needed, and in the transient sleep I saw lighting flashes, strange squeels and the noise of the fan.

Getting up and going for a walk this morning, Venus was covered by cloud in the east, but the full moon was 15 degrees off the western horizon, with a small tinge of pink. The sun was rising behind the clouds but illuminating the rest of the sky.

Since the strange noise in the night kept me looking for evidence of something , there was a lonely flea collar with tufts of white fur on either side of the road……poor creature.

The creek is very low, but the slow trickling sounds make for a pleasant sound.

The walk was very nice, with a slow southern breeze and the little foxes running around, they are almost adult size now.

observatory network recabled

After years of bad, intermittent and in some cases no network access from the observatory at all, we fixed it.
The original cat5 cable was laid down almost ten years ago and ran around the house down into the ground and over to the observatory. It has been chewed through numerous times by critters at the house/fence interface, where critters probably prefer to enter the fenced yard. This was spliced, respliced and fixed many times.
There was also a splice inside the house to extend the cable to the nearest network switch.
As it turns out, the cable underground came out fine. The cable above ground had brittle outside casing, exposed wires in some cases and was in pretty rough shape.
The cable entering the observatory was also chewed through, outer casing, some inner wires as well.
It is a wonder there was any data flowing at all!

The new 100′ cat5e ethernet cable is good for gigabit speeds, is encased in a 75′ garden hose split open lengthwise to get the cable in, and buried deeper than the last.
As a bonus, we will be replacing the old switch out in the observatory that has had a couple of ports fried in nearby lightning strikes with a newer gigabit switch.

5 weeks and done!

The many flower beds are done. After being mostly left alone for a few years, we tackled them all, pulling grass and weeds and covering in mulch for 5 weeks. It was completed this past weekend and now we move into maintenance mode.
In otherwords we start back at the beginning and start all over again 🙂
Some grass is coming through so we will pull that too and add even more mulch to keep it down.
