meade lx200 hand controller woes

This is the hand controller for the Meade LX200 GPS telescope. It is approx 10 years old now and the buttons have become a real pain to use. One must press very hard and sometimes for some time before they may respond.
The unit was taken apart and all of the contacts were cleaned with contact cleaner and cotton q-tips. No change.
Susan had a spare controller for another meade product, and offered it for a test.
Too bad that the hand controller for the Meade ETX is not pin cable compatible at all.

Note the older meade lx200 cable is a 4 connector narrow plug.
The newer meade etx cable is at least an 8 pin? wider plug.
