20130811b_025_perthgarlicfestTed Maczka, is the (Prince Edward) County’s legendary Garlic Man. He’s on a mission is to make Canada self-sufficient in garlic. He’s been called “the Johnny Appleseed of Garlic” for giving away garlic seeds and freely sharing his enormous garlic knowledge. Even the New York Times has written about Ted and published his cloves of wisdom.

Garlic lost its biggest fan this week.

Ted Maczka, who spent four decades growing and researching garlic on a farm in Prince Edward County and driving across the province to proclaim its health benefits, died Monday after a stroke. He was 83.

We met up with Ted at least once a year, at various Garlic Festivals around the local area. We last saw him in Perth in August 2013. He was still smiling and spreading the word. He had also spoken in the past to the Lennox and Addington Horticultural Society.
